Summer activities in Stuben am Arlberg

Hiking paradise Arlberg

Hike and mountain climb in a stunningly blooming Alpine garden. Enjoy a pic-nic with a stunning view. Enjoy the mountain universe on your stroll.

The Lechquellen mountain and Arlberg mountains
These mountain groups can be counted as the most interesting from a geographical point of view for hikers and mountain climbers. Even though the outer regions of the Arlberg area feature a predominant presence of diverse tourism infrastructures, the Lechquellen mountains are still an oasis of peace and quiet. An ideal terrain for ambitious mountain hikers and climbers.

Perfectly located and well-managed huts (mountain association clubs) can be found here as well as numerous signposted alta vias. The circular tour from hut to hut across the whole terrain of the Lechquelle mountains and the Arlberg region in seven days offers mountaineers the possibility of exploring an extraordinary and impressive mountain landscape, becoming quite the special experience.

Min Weag trail

The new ‘Vorarlberg circular trail’ will surprise you for its diverse cultural and natural pockets spread across five regions. The elevation profiles range from soft hilly terrain on the Bregenzerwald forest to the tree border on the Silvretta Alps or Rätikon.

The “Min Weag”, the Vorarlberg circular trail
“Min Weag” comes from the local dialect in Vorarlberg and it translates to “my path”: so want to explore the Vorarlberg in one go or just a stretch of it? Start where you wish. Clockwise or anti-clockwise? It is the same, really. A raft of possibilities await you. Stories step after step.

Discover interesting facets of this area, including an abundance of flora and fauna across such a small stretch of land and a stunning natural landscape. Meet unique people whose roots go as far back as the creation of the region itself. Or even stumble upon the works of a baroque master builder, or learn about the rise and fall of the Wälder Käsebarone (local barons renowned for their cheese). Historical findings substantiate the lively trade which occurred at the time across the passes on the Rätikon, Silvretta and the Arlberg region. In the Rheintal valley in Vorarlberg you can follow the footprints of some of the very first manufacturers who heavily shaped the development of our mountains. One of them was John Sholto Douglass

Nature and culture pop up right next to kitsch elements in a number of natural areas which reinterpret the concept of a countryside outing. Listen to the call of the mountains (or that of a shepherd), the rustle of the wind in the trees (or the bubbling of a stream) and the lakes (or a SPA) singing their siren call.

Min Weag 12 | Stuttgart Hut - Kaltenberg Hut
Start from the Stuttgart hut and cross the hill to Valluga. From there, descend to the Ulmer Hut, and continue to the Arlberg pass. Continue to climb until the Kaltenberg Hut.

Click here for a description of the excursion.

Min Weag 13 | Kaltenberg Hut - Konstanz Hut
Beautiful high altitude excursion across lush green meadows and rocky terrain up to the Krachelspitze summit and the Gstandsjöchli and from there down to Konstanz Hut.

Jakobsweg / Pilgrim Path

On the Jakobsweg across the Klostertal valley / Arlbergweg path

Start from Landeck and walk by St. Anton am Arlberg to reach St. Christoph. This is where the Arlberg Hospice is located, founded in 1386 by Heinrich Findelkind to ensure travellers in need received protection and accommodation. It is to this very day still the headquarters of the St. Christoph Brotherhood.

From the parking space in St. Christoph cross the pass to the historical Arlbergweg path, which leads to the Alpe Rauz mountain. From there follow the Rauzbach stream across Rauz-Tobel towards Stuben. Walking by the church you will reach the POST Hotel, the pilgrim-friendly accommodation in Stuben.

From Stuben a picturesque footpath leads to the Passürtobel. Continue on a former A road towards Langen. After the new rail tracks were placed in the Großtobeltunnel, you can now follow the old rail tracks towards Klösterle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the 2,244 m Burtschakopf mountain.

During the inauguration celebrations of the Arlberg railway, Emperor Kaiser Franz Josef I briefly visited Klösterle in 1884. He didn’t miss the opportunity to personally visit the Wäldletobel bridge built in 1883. Even you can follow the ‘footprints’ of the Emperor. Climb the stairs and arrive directly in front of a impressive technical work of art: lo and behold, the Wäldletobel viaduct.

In Klösterle you can visit the Johanniter Hospice. It was founded in 1218 by Earl Hugo I of Montfort. The village and Valley of Klostertal were named after this small cloister. Surrounded by the Lechtal Alps and the Verwall Mountains, you will experience a varied landscape offset by the diversity of the side vallies.

‘Spiritual excursions’
Experience pilgrim paths under a new light

How can a motorway bridge be a pilgrimage station?
How does an uprooted tree move me?
What leads me to sit down and reflect?

Ulrike and Christian Dittmar describe how pilgrim trails can be seen under a new light in their book “Spirituelle Wanderungen” (Spiritual Excursions) Walking becomes a spiritual exercise, stopping equals to consciousness and perception, and you can create energy from meditation and movement alike.

The authors describe how to take the physical experience to the next level across eight paths: trees as symbol for the rhythm of life, footprints in the snow or snow as a reflection of your own journey in life, a spring becomes the spring of life, finding your pace as you walk, crossroads, stones and walls as an allegory to the challenges in life, or the rays of sun as hope and a new start.

“This book will help everyone experience how they feel while walking. It is a signpost to mindfulness. In our world of images with a constant flow of information we can return to learning the relaxed, loving art of simply observing. Maybe even by praying using our eyes.” These are the words in the preface to the book as summarised by journalist Franz Alt.
